Dima Geshkenbein was born on August 4th, 1965 in Moscow, USSR. He is Russian and Swiss citizen (Regensdorf, ZH). He studied physics at the Moscow Institute for Physics and Technology. He received his Ph. D. in theoretical physics for studying vortices in high-Tc superconductors in 1990 under direction of A. I. Larkin at the L. D. Landau Institute for Theoretical Physics in Moscow. After that he joined the scientific staff of this institute. In 1991 he moved as PostDoc to ETH Zurich. During 1993-1994 he participated in the program of the Joint Center for Theoretical Physics of the Landau Institute, Moscow, Russia and the Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot, Israel. In 2000 he received his second doctoral degree (equivalent of habilitation) from the L. D. Landau Institute for Theoretical Physics.
