New Electronic Properties through Structure and Correlation

Japan Swiss Workshop 2011

The discoveries of materials with novel electronic properties is a driving force and a great challenge for theoretical condensed matter physics. The major goals lie in the identification, description, and understanding of the electronic phases in such materials, ranging from modeling at a microscopic level to their phenomenological description. Well-established and traditional theories describing ”standard” electronic phases (simple metals, semiconductors, conventional superconductors or magnets) are often insufficient to address ”novel” properties of materials which are not classified within these categories and require new concepts. Many of these materials belong to the class of strongly correlated electron systems, but recently also other most intriguing new properties have been found on the level of single-particle physics, e.g. in graphene and topological insulators.

This workshops is a joined activity between Switzerland and Japan and has a long tradition dating back to the early nineties. In the past been it had been funded by various organizations in Japan and Switzerland, such as SNF, PSI, the Japanese Kakenhi (JSPS) and NEDO etc.
