Fabian Hassler 12.03.2009 Fermi-Golden Rule versus Rabi Oscillations: Condensed Matter versus Atom
Optics

In the description of systems where a bound state is driven into a continuum
via the application of a time-dependent potential, Fermi's golden rule is
conventionally employed. We show that while this picture is well-suited
condensed-matter systems, in atom optics this might not be the case:
without the existence of dissipative baths (phonons, photons, ...), the
driving is much closer related to Rabi physics which for weak driving
shows a continuous cross-over to Fermi's golden rule.

Bela Bauer 26.03.2009 Quantum State Discrimination as a Tool for Condensed Matter Physics

We propose that a measure originating in quantum state discrimination, the probability of error, can be used for the assessment of ansatz wavefunctions with numerically determined wavefunctions. The measure, wich has well-defined scaling properties to the thermodynamic limit, compares all correlation functions of two states and can therefore be used to distinguish phases and also locate quantum critical points.
