Proseminar Spring 2024

The Institute offers three Proseminars in Theoretical Physics during the Spring Semester 2024. Signing up is not on a first-come, first-serve basis. Instead, the final wishlist will be processed only after the deadline on December 10, 2023.

Registration and topic assignment

All Master and Bachelor students (sixth semester) will be informed by email from the studies secretary beginning December 2023.

If you are interested in taking a proseminar in FS24, please register before Sunday 10 December 2023.  

The assignment of the individual proseminar topics to the registered participants will take place in three different meetings on

  • Tuesday December 19, 2023, 16:00
    Abandoned Ideas in Mathematical Physics (ny Johannes Brödel)

  • Friday December 15, 2023, 16:00
    Open Questions in Particle Physics and Cosmology (by Achilleas Lazopoulos)

  • Friday December 15, 2023, 15:00
    Theory of many-body quantum systems (by Atac Imamoglu & Eugene Demler)

The registered students will be contacted with more details by the proseminar lecturer.

Format

Each student has to give a presentation (50 +10 min), and write a brief report (15-20 page) on the assigned topic. The student is supported during this process by a tutor from the Institute of Theoretical Physics who will provide guidence and feedback.

The student should contact the tutor at least six weeks prior to the talk, and have a first version of the slides ready two weeks before the talk. The written report must be completed (and approved by the tutor) at the latest two weeks after the talk.

Requirements for passing the module

  • The student gives a pedagogical talk on the assigned topic, demonstrating a firm understanding of the subject.
  • The written report provides a clear exposition of the assigned topic.
  • The student is present during at least 80% of all the proseminar sessions.
